Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay had an aunt who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use art as a method of expression. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. When she was in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a young publicist for a studio. In 1999, she established her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
